Streamlined Sales Tax
The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, often shortened to Streamlined Sales Tax or simply SST, is a collaboration among 44 states, the District of Columbia, local governments, and the business community. SST works with state governments to simplify and unify sales and use tax laws that make the collection of sales tax easier for both the retailer and the member states.
SST Certified Service Providers
AccurateTax.com is a SST Certified Service Provider (CSP). (Read the press release here.) As a CSP, we are able to provide SST volunteer sellers with a certified software solution for calculating, collecting, and remitting sales tax through their web site. This offering is subsidized by SST, meaning that qualifying customers don’t pay anything to use AccurateTax to calculate sales tax in those states.
Currently, the following states are members of the SST and have passed legislation supporting the Streamlined Sales Tax efforts:
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Dakota
- Tennessee (associate member)
- West Virginia
Benefits to Sellers
Retailers may choose to register as a volunteer seller with the SST. The benefits of becoming a volunteer seller under the contract and using certified software such as our TaxTools™ product are:
- Business immunity from audit liability for any sales processed through the software
- State-subsidized costs for software in certain cases
- A single identification number used to file and pay taxes for member states
- The ability to update registration data for all member states at one time and place
- Tax returns filed automatically by the Certified Service Provider.
